Neville Kidd, ASC

Early in his career, Neville Kidd, ASC — who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and currently resides in Glasgow — worked as a cinematographer and camera operator on documentary films and television series. For the past several years, he has primarily served as director of photography on scripted television series and miniseries, and some of his most celebrated work has been shot on location in his native Scotland.

One such project was the acclaimed television drama Outlander, for which Kidd shot the first two seasons and was nominated for a 2017 ASC Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Regular Series for Non-Commercial Television

In the three-part television miniseries Childhood’s End, which was also filmed in Scotland, Kidd filtered lighting through colored fabric and used silver birch panels as reflectors in order to give what he calls a “pre-Industrial Revolution” feeling.

For his work on Sherlock: His Last Vow, Kidd received a 2014 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited Series or Movie, the Online Film & Television Association Award for Best Cinematography in a Non-Series and was included in Variety’s 2016 Below-the-Line Impact Report.

Kidd also served as cinematographer on Doctor Who, including the special 77-minute episode “The Day of the Doctor,” which marked the series’ 50th anniversary and was broadcast simultaneously in 94 countries and screened in some 3D theaters worldwide.

Kidd’s credits also include the television series Altered Carbon and Travelers, and his accolades include the 2013 Festróia - Tróia International Film Festival’s award for Best Cinematography for Solid Air and the 2009 BAFTA Award for Best Television Craft Photography — Factual for A History of Scotland.

He is currently filming the series The Umbrella Academy
