ASC Welcomes Linus Sandgren as a New Active Member

The Stockholm native received the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on La La Land

Linus Sandgren, ASC, FSF grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, where he studied graphic design and illustration at the Berghs School of Communication and film at the Stockholm Film School. He started his career as a camera assistant before moving into the role of cinematographer in 1999.


Sandgren’s debut feature was the Swedish fantasy drama Storm, which was critically acclaimed and earned the cinematographer a Swedish Film Institute Guldbagge Award for Best Cinematography. 


Two years later, Sandgren relocated to Los Angeles, where he served as director of photography on commercials with directors including John Hillcoat, Adam Berg, Rupert Sanders, Tom Hooper, Dougal Wilson and Fredrik Bond. For his commercial cinematography, Sandgren has been honored with four Cannes Lions among other awards.


In 2012, the cinematographer was hired by director Gus Van Sant to photograph the feature Promised Land, and since then, he has worked with directors David O. Russell on American Hustle and Joy; Lasse Hallström on The Hundred-Foot Journey and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms; Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris on Battle of the Sexes (AC Podcast episode here); and Damien Chazelle on La La Land and First Man


For his work on La La Land, Sandgren received the 2016 Academy Award for Best Cinematography in addition to the BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography and an ASC Award nomination.


Sandgren is currently in prep to shoot the untitled 25th film in the James Bond franchise, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga. 


He has been a member of the Swedish Society of Cinematographers (FSF) since 2000.
