Clubhouse Conversations — Sound of Falling

In this episode, cinematographer Fabian Gamper is joined by interviewer Patrick Cady, ASC to discuss his work on Sound of Falling — a drama that explores the lives of four girls, each of whom spend their childhoods on the same farmstead during different historical time periods.

Sound of Falling follows Alma (Hanna Heckt), Erika (Lea Drinda), Angelika (Lena Urzendowsky) and Lenka (Laeni Geiseler), four young girls who spend their childhoods on the same farmstead in Germany's Altmark region during different decades of the 20th and 21st centuries — the 1910s, 1940s, 1980s and 2020s, respectively. The film premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize, and is now Germany's entry for the Best International Feature Film Oscar.

Conversation Highlights

Gamper's conversation with Cady explores a range of strategies, as well as the creative and practical challenges he encountered, including:

• How he and director Masha Shalinsky aimed to ground the film's fluid, time-jumping narrative in emotional subjectivity
• Drawing inspiration from postmortem photography and analog formats to shape the film's texture
• His modification and use of vintage lenses to help create soft, dreamlike imagery
• Lighting night interiors with period-accurate practical fixtures
• Testing and refining a digital workflow to help preserve the filmmakers' visual intent

Fabian Gamper is a cinematographer whose credits include the features Die Tochter and Der Junge, dem die Welt gehört, as well as the music video for Rammstein's "Zeit," for which he was nominated for a Music Video Competition Golden Frog at Camerimage in 2022.

Patrick Cady, ASC is a cinematographer who made his feature-cinematography debut with Karyn Kusama’s award-winning drama Girlfight. His credits include the series Bosch, Rectify, Betrayal and Insecure, for which he received an Emmy Award nomination.
